Day 2: The Roaring 20’s (The 1920s)

Activity 1: Popular Culture – The Silent Movie
The 1920s saw a massive surge in the number of people going to the movies. Huge new cinemas were built in both Auckland (The Civic Theatre) and Dunedin (Empire De Luxe).  The most popular type of movies showing at local NZ cinemas were ‘silent’ films. Gold Rush and The Lion's Cage are examples of iconic silent films. They feature a famous actor named Charlie Chaplin.

Watch the trailer for Gold Rush or The Lion's Cage. On your blog, tell us what you think the movie is about. There are no words spoken movie so you will need to pay careful attention to what the actors are doing! Do you think you would enjoy watching a silent film? Why/Why not?

I think that Gold Rush is about people looking for gold or money for a new life.

I would not enjoy a silent movie because I would not know what they are talking about and silent is not my thing.

  1. Hey Samuel,
I would enjoy a silent movie because you can just watch it quietly. If I watched it I'd probably fall asleep.

    Good Work

  2. Hey Samuel,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team!

Because we now have advanced technology, we are able to watch movies that are colourful, interesting, and with good music and sound system. Back then, people did not have the same technology like we have today. They could only make black and white movies with back ground music and some sound effects!

Back in early 1900s, people enjoyed watching black and white movies because otherwise they only had books for entertainment! Would you rather read books or watch a black and white movie?

Also, before the invention of moving images, they only had still images and made it into a movie! Can you imagine watching a movie with no moving pictures with subtitles?

I wonder what kind of technology will be invented in the future? What do you think the cinema would be like in 2100? Do you think it's going to be similar to what we have today? I would love to hear your own thoughts and opinions!

    Cheers,
    Jade C.
