Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi

On 6 February 1840, a very special document was signed by the Māori chiefs and the British settlers in New Zealand. It was called the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) and it outlined how the two groups would live together and work together in New Zealand. It was the first document of its kind to be signed in the entire world. The Treaty was signed in a place called Waitangi in northern New Zealand.

Follow this Waitangi village link to read about the village of Waitangi.

On your blog, tell us three fun things that you can do as a visitor in Waitangi. Which one would you like to do the most?

* Today the Treaty Grounds are an opportunity to learn about Maori culture and the historical events associated with the signing of the treaty.

You can take a tour along the Waitangi River or explore the small semi-formal garden that surrounds the Treaty House to the 6-kilometre forest walk that leads to Haruru Falls.

Not only is Waitangi engaging from an educational point of view, it's also a very beautiful place to explore.

  2. Hey Samuel,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey blogging team! Are you excited to go back to school? My little cousin told me that he is all ready to go back to school and meet his friends.

I have a friend over from Korea and she doesn't know anything about New Zealand or Maori culture so recently I have been taking her to some places in Auckland and she learnt many new things about this country. I would love to take her to Waitangi to give her an opportunity to learn about Maori culture and history. We would get to see some beautiful nature as well as learning more about this country.

Thank you for your useful and helpful information about the things to do in Waitangi. I hope you've also learnt something while completing this activity.

    Cheers,
    Jade C.
