Winter Learning Journey - Activity Bonus Day 7

Bonus: This year two new sports are being added to the Paralympic Games. They are canoeing and triathlon. In the triathlon the athletes must swim 750 metres, cycle for 20 kilometres, and then run for 5 kilometres. Paralympic athletes may also compete in other sports including archery, boccia, football, judo, powerlifting, rowing, sailing, swimming, sitting volleyball, track cycling, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis. Imagine that you are on the Paralympic Committee and you have been asked to create one new sport to add to the competition for this year. Use your awesome imagination to design a brand new Paralympic sport. Please remember that some of the athletes will not be able to walk or run and others may be blind or deaf. On your blog, please write:

  1. The name of your sport,
  2. A brief description of how you play the sport, and
  3. Three rules for the sport

Wheelchair Basketball
Two teams of five players in wheelchairs must try to score points by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s basket as many times as possible before time runs out
Each team has 24 seconds of possession of the ball before they must shoot.

2.A player can push their wheelchair and bounce the ball simultaneously.
3.The player is only allowed to push twice before they are must shoot.

    This is a great idea! It is a sport that both men and women can play regardless of their physical ability/disability. I like the way that you thought carefully about what our Paralympic athletes could manage and then chose a sport that met their needs. That shows that you were considerate and deliberate in your thinking. Great work!

    I hope that you enjoyed the Winter Learning Journey programme. You certainly did an amazing job with it! I can't believe that you got through all 21 activities so quickly. It is really impressive!!
